Sunday 19th February at 3.30pm Ensemble Productions, Znaniye Education Centre and Pushkin House are proud to present a Children's performance of Nikolay Gogol's masterpiece 'Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka' for the Russian-speaking children of London (aged 6 and older) and all the family. 'Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka' is set on Nikolay Gogol's masterpiece, which inspired Russia's most famous composer Petr Tchaikovsky when writing his opera 'Tceherevichki' ('Tzarina's Shoes'). It is a fantasy about true love triumphing over evil; with miraculous changes, funny intrigues, khorovods (dance circles), kolyadki (seasonal songs) exciting music and dance, it is a truly merry kaleidoscope of folklore and fun! According to the story, not even the demon Chort can stop Goldsmith Vakula in his quest to get the beautiful shoes from the Tzarina Catherine the Great herself, in order to please his capricious girlfriend Oksana. The Moscow State Gogol Theatre was founded in 1925 and to this day remains one of the leading theatrical institutions in Moscow. During the course of the theatre's 85 year existence, hundreds of leading Soviet and Russian actors including the legendary Leonid Utesov have graced its stage, performing in dozens of spectacular shows and plays by N. Gogol, A. Ostrovsky, O. Wild, A. Platonov, S. Maugham and many others. The cast includes Honoured Artists of Russia Alexander Bordukov, Anna Gulyarenko, Yanis Yakobson and the laureate of Moscow Prize Irina Vybornova among many other talented actors. Directed by the People's Artist of Russia Sergey Yashin and featuring the exciting artistic creations of the Theatre's Chief designer Elena Kachaeva, Moscow State Gogol Theatre's performances remain increasingly popular among audiences of all ages and the hardest Moscow critics.
