Norman Balon – It’s All True is a one off. Playing for one night only at the Shaftesbury Theatre, it tells the unique story of London’s Rudest Landlord, Norman Balon.

Renowned for his up yours hospitality, Norman ruled the roost at the infamous Coach and Horses from 1943 to 2006. He survived the war years, the Maltese mafia, protection rackets, pimps, prostitutes and the drunkest old soaks of Soho, Jeffrey Bernard, Peter O’Toole, Francis Bacon and John Hurt to name a few. During his reign he barred some of London’s most famous, and, as legend has it, you can still hear the echo of him bellowing his famous phrase “You’re barred you b*******” if you hold a pint glass over your ear in the Coach.

If you miss it, you really have missed it! It’s irreverent, littered with profanity, hugely entertaining, shocking, surprising, very funny and ALL TRUE! It tells of his life and love affair with Soho, the Coach and the people that drifted through.

The play is a tribute to not only Norman as he reaches his 96th birthday but also to Soho and its unique, creative and social impact on the life of London.

‘We had the Krays in here and they tried it with me and I told them to f*** off and they did…’

Norman was immortalised in the play Jeffery Bernard is Unwell and instrumental in the infamous Private Eye Lunches –

‘Good old Norman…’ lamented Peter O’Toole starring as Jeffery Bernard at the Old Vic.

I’ve come for the P.E lunch they’d say. ‘Well, who the bloody hell are you?’, I’d ask… to stunned silence.

It’s said the worst insult you can get is not to have been insulted by Norman. Now’s your chance – don’t miss this red carpet performance!
