Accessible Performances of Mrs Doubtfire The Musical

At the Shaftesbury Theatre, accessibility is of paramount importance. We have made a lot of changes in the past couple of years to make all our audience members feel welcome and for them to have comfortable visit.

As part of our Dramatic Transformation, the Shaftesbury is more accessible than ever. These updates have made the Stalls and The 1911 Bar fully accessible. To find out more about our accessible seating, visit our Accessibility page.

This May, we have three access performances available to book. In addition to the access performances below, we also offer relaxed performances for theatregoers who might find a traditional theatre environment challenging.

Audio described performances

23rd May 2024, 7.30 pm

Audio Description offers real-time spoken commentary that details the visual aspects of a performance as it happens. It narrates crucial actions pivotal to the storyline, alongside other visual details like the artistic style, set designs, costumes, facial expressions, and visual gags. This narration synchronizes with the dialogue of the performance, allowing audience members to listen through a headset.

BSL performances

11th May 2024, 2:30 pm

During British Sign Language Interpreted Performances, an interpreter will position themselves prominently for visibility and interpret both spoken dialogue and auditory elements of the show.

Captioned performances

15th May 2024, 7:30 pm

Captioning closely resembles subtitling. During a captioned performance, the dialogue is displayed on screens positioned near the stage or within the set, synchronizing with the spoken or sung words in real-time. Additionally, names of speakers, sound effects, and offstage noises are also included. A skilled captioner preps the script beforehand to match the pace and atmosphere of the performance, delivering the captions live as the onstage action unfolds.
